IPVal entity, 5G IP Holdings, 5G patent found invalid

On February 18, 2025, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a notice of intent to issue a reexamination certificate canceling all claims (claims 1-12) of U.S. Patent 10,813,163, owned and asserted by 5G IP Holdings LLC, an NPE and IP Valuation Partners, LLC entity. The '163 patent generally relates to discontinuous reception (DRX) and utilizing slots within subframes to adapt DRX to function within the 5G frame structure. The patent had previously been asserted against Apple and Samsung.

Express Mobile website-builder claim cancelled

On October 3, 2024, the Patent Office issued a reexamination certificate cancelling claim 1 of U.S. Patent 6,546,397, owned and asserted by Express Mobile, Inc. In May 2024, the Federal Circuit affirmed the Patent Office's final decision confirming that claim 1 was unpatentable. The ’397 patent generally relates to website building software. Express Mobile has asserted this patent over 100 times in district court against companies employing both proprietary website-building platforms and open-source platforms like WordPress and Magento. Its numerous complaints have included assertions against companies large and small, including eGrove Systems, Shopify, Web.com Group, Inc., Squarespace, and HubSpot.

IP Investments Group entity, DataCloud Tech, cloud networking patent found invalid

On May 30, 2024, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) issued a notice of intent to issue a reexamination certificate cancelling all 20 claims of U.S. Patent 8,762,498, owned by DataCloud Technologies, LLC, an NPE and an IP Investments Group entity. The ‘498 patent generally relates to communicating to a network through a virtual domain. It has been asserted in over 25 district court litigations, including against McAfee, 8x8, A10 Networks, Squarespace, Box, Arista Networks, Extreme Networks, and others.

DynaIP entity, Silent Communication, telecom patent claim cancelled

On September 25, 2023, the USPTO issued a Notice of Intent to Issue Ex Parte Reexamination Certificate in RE90/015,109, cancelling the lone claim of U.S. Patent 8,229,409, owned by Silent Communication, LLC, an NPE and DynaIP entity. The ’409 patent relates to recovering calls after an erroneous disconnection and has been asserted against Adobe, Fuze, Lifesize, and Zoho. Unified filed the request for ex parte reexamination in August 2022.

PacSec3 '497 firewall patent claims cancelled in ex parte reexamination

On May 1, 2023, the Central Reexamination Unit issued a notice of intent to issue a reexamination certificate, canceling claims 1, 4, 13, and 16 of U.S. Patent 7,523,497, owned by PacSec3, an NPE. PacSec3 was formed in 2020 with NACAR IP LLC as its managing member. NACAR IP was also formed in early 2020 with Dynamic IP Deals, LLC (d/b/a DynaIP), a patent monetization company, identified as its managing member. The ‘497 patent had been asserted against F5 Networks, NetScout Systems, Palo Alto Networks, McAfee, Cisco, and Juniper Networks.
