Vision Works IP automotive patent instituted

On August 25, 2023, less than two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,437,935, owned and asserted by Vision Works IP Corp., an NPE. The ’935 patent generally relates to a vehicle monitoring system for turning off an idling engine. The ’935 patent is currently being asserted against Nissan and was previously asserted against Mercedes-Benz USA.

Magnetar Capital entity Togail Technologies 3GPP patent likely invalid

On August 18, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 10,791,502, owned by Togail Technologies Ltd., a Magnetar Capital entity. The ’502 patent relates to error-handling procedures for system information requests in communications and has been asserted against 3GPP devices. It is currently being asserted against Apple and had been asserted against TCL Technology Group.

Dynapass IP user authentication patent likely invalid

On July 18, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 6,993,658, owned and asserted by Dynapass IP Holdings LLC. The '658 patent is generally directed to two factor authentication systems using personal communication devices. The '658 patent had been asserted against several banks including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Truist, and PNC, and was recently asserted against Amazon and Experian.

Ozmo Licensing Wi-Fi patent likely invalid

On June 20, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 9,264,991, owned and asserted by Ozmo Licensing LLC. The ‘991 patent is generally directed to a wireless hub that integrates wireless networks and has been asserted against HP, Inc, Acer, Dell Technologies, and TCL.

Pedersen '920 message distribution patent likely invalid

On May 15, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 6,965,920, owned and asserted by Peter Henrik Pedersen. The '920 patent is generally directed to the specification and management of how messages are distributed to recipients. The patent has been asserted against several companies including Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Zoho Corp., Salesforce, Oracle, Adobe, Intuit, Wix.com, Zendesk, and others.
