Two Chinese ETRI video codec patents held invalid

The Beijing Intellectual Property Court found all claims of two Chinese patents, CN103384333B and CN104219523B, invalid after the patent owner, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), filed an appeal. The CN’333 and CN’523 patents are related to patents that are designated essential to the Access Advance (formerly known as HEVC Advance) patent pool as well as SISVEL’s AV1 and VP9 patent pools.

Stasit smartphone patent challenged

On November 10, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,855,723, owned and asserted by Stasit, LLC, an NPE. The ‘723 patent is directed to smartphones that can mask notifications of incoming calls and text messages for certain unauthorized numbers during certain times and only logging a record of those temporally unauthorized communications on a password protected log, while allowing incoming communications from authorized numbers to be handled normally (regular notification and logging on the general log). It has been asserted against Apple, Meta Platforms, Google, LG, Samsung, and HTC.

Another Fortress entity, Entropic, broadcast cable patent reexam granted

On November 6, 2023, seven weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,210,362, owned and asserted by Entropic Communications, an NPE and Fortress IP subsidiary. The ’362 patent generally relates to a wideband receiver that outputs a selected plurality of television channels to a demodulator. The patent is currently being asserted against Cox, Comcast, and Charter Communications.

On October 27, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 9,854,207, owned and asserted by SOTAT, LLC, an NPE. The ‘207 patent relates to a mobile surveillance system that connects to a mobile device and has been asserted against twelve defendants, including Canary Connect, HeathCo, Wyze Labs, Adobe Systems, Vivint, and Resideo.

Fortress entity, Entropic Communications, broadband patent reexam granted

On October 26, 2023, six weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,594,249, owned and asserted by Entropic Communications, an NPE and Fortress IP subsidiary. The '249 patent generally relates to communication between devices in a local area network utilizing coaxial wiring. The patent is currently being asserted against DirecTV / AT&T, Cox, Comcast, and Dish Network.
