Helios MPEG-DASH patent challenged

On December 14, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 10,362,130, owned and asserted by Helios Streaming LLC, an NPE and entity of Ideahub, Inc. The ‘130 patent is relevant to systems that are compliant with the MPEG-DASH standard; its claims are directed to providing adaptive HTTP streaming services using metadata of media content to ensure smooth playback. It has been asserted against Crackle, Starz, Showtime, Vudu, Fandango, Warner Brothers, and HBO.

Graphite Charging power supply patent challenge instituted

On December 13, 2023, three weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,291,243, owned by Graphite Charging Company LLC, an NPE. The ‘243 patent relates to an adaptive power supply system and has been asserted against Tesla.

IPVal entity, eCeipt, electronic receipts patent challenge instituted

On December 7, 2023, less than a month after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,643,875, owned by eCeipt, LLC, an NPE and IPValuation Partners entity.  The ‘875 patent relates to sending electronic receipts to a customer. It has been asserted against 24 retailers including a pending assertion against Advanced Auto Parts.

Stasit smartphone patent challenged instituted

On December 1, 2023, less than one month after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,855,723, owned and asserted by Stasit, LLC, an NPE. The ‘723 patent is directed to smartphones that can mask notifications of incoming calls and text messages for certain unauthorized numbers during certain times and only logging a record of those temporally unauthorized communications on a password protected log, while allowing incoming communications from authorized numbers to be handled normally (regular notification and logging on the general log). The ‘723 patent was the sole patent asserted against Apple, Meta Platforms, Google, LG, Samsung, and HTC.

Mel NavIP automobile speech recognition patent challenged

On December 7, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,060,368, owned and asserted by Mel NavIP, LLC. The '368 patent is generally directed to navigation and speech recognition for a vehicle. The patent had been asserted against Toyota and is currently asserted against GM and Hyundai.
