SOTAT surveillance patent found invalid

On August 12, 2024, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of all the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,854,207, owned and asserted by SOTAT, LLC, an NPE. The ‘207 patent relates to a mobile surveillance system that connects to a mobile device and has been asserted against fifteen defendants, including Canary Connect, HeathCo, Wyze Labs, Adobe Systems, Vivint, and Resideo.

Fortress entity, Entropic, broadcast cable patent found invalid

On August 7, 2024, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of all the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,210,362, owned and asserted by Entropic Communications, an NPE and Fortress IP subsidiary. The ’362 patent generally relates to a wideband receiver that outputs a selected plurality of television channels to a demodulator. The patent was asserted against Cox, Comcast, and Charter Communications.

Anonymous Media ad monitoring patent challenged

On August 8, 2024, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,756,622, owned by Anonymous Media Research Holdings, LLC. The ‘622 patent relates to media monitoring and measurement systems. The patent has been asserted against Samsung and Roku.

Fourth CellSpinsoft data transfer patent challenge instituted

On August 2, 2024, three months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 11,659,381, owned and asserted by CellSpinsoft, Inc., an NPE. The ‘381 patent, similar to CellSpinsoft’s U.S. Patent 8,904,030, is directed to uploading data to a remote server using a mobile device as an intermediary, where the data comes from a device that does not have network connectivity. It has been asserted against ByteDance.

DynaIP entity, Cloud Systems HoldCo IP, IoT patent challenge instituted

On July 12, 2024, four weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,533,326, owned and asserted by Cloud Systems HoldCo IP, LLC, an NPE and DynaIP entity.  The ’326 patent focuses on a system and method for efficiently managing and routing data among multiple devices within a given environment. It was asserted against Philips North America.
