InterDigital AV1/VP9 patent challenge instituted

On March 13, 2025, less than three weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 10,080,024, owned by InterDigital VC Holdings. The '024 patent is directed to increasing video encoding efficiency by dividing a block of pixels into groups and using different intra-planar prediction methods for each group. The patent had previously been designated as essential to SISVEL’s AV1 and VP9 patent pools. The reexamination was filed as part of Unified’s ongoing efforts in the SEP Video Codec Zone.

Leigh M. Rothschild entity, Touchpoint Projection, cybersecurity patent challenged

On March 17, 2025, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 9,118,712, owned and asserted by Touchpoint Projection Innovations LLC, an NPE and entity of Leigh M. Rothschild. The ‘712 patent generally relates to an approach to enhancing web browsing security by addressing sophisticated malware. It has been asserted against Forcepoint, Check Point Software, Zscaler, Boradcom, and Fortinet.

BrowserKey security patent challenge instituted

On March 13, 2025, three weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on challenged claims 11-17 of U.S. Patent 7,249,262, owned and asserted by BrowserKey LLC, an NPE. The '262 patent generally relates to a method of restricting data access to a server by unauthorized client machines. It has been asserted against Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Charles Schwab.

InfoGation navigation patent found invalid

On March 6, 2025, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a notice of intent to issue a reexamination certificate canceling all claims of U.S. Patent 8,406,994, owned and asserted by InfoGation Corporation, an NPE. The '994 patent is generally directed to displaying maps on GPS receivers. It has been asserted against Toyota, Honda, BMW, and Changan Ford Automobile Company.

Fraud Free Transactions secure transactions patent challenged

On March 7, 2025, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 11,551,215, owned and asserted by Fraud Free Transactions, LLC. The ‘215 patent relates to fraud deterrence for secure transactions. It has been asserted against Okta and Ping Identity Corporation.
