On November 22, 2017, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 8,295,862 owned and asserted by Anuwave LLC, an IP Edge entity and well-known NPE. The '862 patent, directed to “a terminal station, e.g., a mobile phone, that contains meta information of available SMS-based services, a mobile number for an SMS gateway delivering the services, and parameters for each of the services,” has been asserted in 47 district court cases as of the filing of Unified's petition. TCF Financial Corporation and Capitol Federal Savings Bank are currently involved in litigation over the '862 patent.
