IP Investments entity DigiMedia Tech H.264/AVC patent challenge instituted

On February 22, 2024, one month after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 6,606,287, owned by DigiMedia Tech, LLC, an NPE and an IP Investments Group entity. The ‘287 patent generally relates to recording and storing a media signal, while determining an optimal compression rate based on characteristics of the media signal while maintaining acceptable quality. The patent has been asserted against devices using H.264 / AVC from companies including Panasonic, Lenovo, OnePlus, TCT Mobile, Xiaomi, and Best Buy.

InfoGation navigation patent challenged

On February 28, 2024, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,406,994, owned and asserted by InfoGation Corporation, an NPE. The '994 patent is generally directed to displaying maps on GPS receivers. It has been asserted against Toyota, Honda, BMW, and Changan Ford Automobile Company.

IPVal entity Rosen Technologies thermostat patent held invalid

On February 28, 2024, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. Rosen Technologies LLC holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,156,318 unpatentable. Owned and asserted by Rosen Technologies LLC, an NPE and entity of IP Valuation Partners, the ‘318 patent is directed to a programmable thermostat having virtual buttons that control space conditioning equipment. It had been asserted against Resideo Technologies and Lennox International, and most recently, Ecobee.

First post-referral IP Edge entity Communication Advances camera patent challenged

On February 23, 2024, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,823,826, owned by Communication Advances LLC, an NPE and entity of IP Edge. The ‘826 patent is being asserted against GM in one of IP Edge’s first litigation campaigns after three of the lawyers associated with the NPE were referred for discipline by Delaware Chief Judge Connolly for violating professional conduct rules.

The ‘826 patent is directed to digital cameras and image processing methods for digital cameras where an application is triggered when the subject’s eye-gazing direction meets an eye-gazing criterion. It has been asserted against GM.

Datanet file backup patent found invalid

On February 23, 2024, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,473,478, owned and asserted by Datanet, LLC. The ‘478 patent is directed to an automatic real-time file management method and apparatus. The patent is currently being asserted against Microsoft and Dropbox.
