Fortress IP entity, Neo Wireless, 4G/LTE patent challenge instituted

On March 14, 2024, three months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,948,488, owned by Neo Wireless, LLC, an NPE and Fortress IP entity. The '488 patent generally relates to transmitting probing signals in a wireless communication system employing OFDM, where multi-carrier signals and spread spectrum signals are overlaid together in both time and frequency domains. This reexamination challenge is part of Unified’s 3GPP zone. The '488 patent has not been asserted in litigation before, but related family members have been asserted against Mercedes-Benz, FCA, Toyota, Nissan, GM, Tesla, and others.

IP Edge entity Communication Advances camera patent challenge instituted

On March 15, 2024, less than three weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,823,826, owned by Communication Advances LLC, an NPE and entity of IP Edge. The ‘826 patent is being asserted against GM in one of IP Edge’s first litigation campaigns after three of the lawyers associated with the NPE were referred for discipline by Delaware Chief Judge Connolly for violating professional conduct rules.

The ‘826 patent is directed to digital cameras and image processing methods for digital cameras where an application is triggered when the subject’s eye-gazing direction meets an eye-gazing criterion. It has been asserted against GM.

OptiMorphix networking patent challenged

On March 8, 2024, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 7,099,273, owned by OptiMorphix, Inc. The ‘273 patent relates to data transmission based on round trip times. It has been asserted against multiple technologies ranging from cloud services to routers from Amazon, Cisco, F5, Google, and Oracle.

Equitable IP entity Scale Video Coding multicast network patent prior art found

Unified is pleased to announce prior art has been found on U.S. Patent 11,019,372, owned by Scale Video Coding, LLC, an NPE and an Equitable IP entity. The ‘372 patent generally relates to an overlay multicast network may provide a set of features to ensure reliable and timely arrival of multicast data. The invention relates to the management of data packets to support multicasting. The patent has been asserted against Cisco, Zoom, Mitel Networks, Brightcove, NTT Cloud Communications, and V-Cube USA.

On March 5, 2024, three months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,060,368, owned and asserted by Mel NavIP, LLC. The '368 patent is generally directed to navigation and speech recognition for a vehicle. The patent had been asserted against Toyota and is currently asserted against GM and Hyundai.
