Unified Patents is searching for someone familiar in legal services or patent law, but it is not a traditional attorney role. The position requires managing many hats since it combines legal, data, and marketing. You will help create and implement data strategies for new tools that Unified provides through Unified's Portal and help communicate with marketing to evaluate feedback. This role is not a traditional attorney role (i.e. doesn't involve writing briefs). Rather, your legal mind will be applied to helping us build our tools and interpret data.

Vivint joins Unified Patents

We are pleased to announce that Vivint, a leading smart home and security company, is now a Unified Patents member. Vivint’s products help families live intelligently in safer, smarter homes. Vivint is joining 300+ other companies committed to deterring the assertion of bad patents by non-practicing entities (NPEs). In 2023, NPEs still accounted for 58% of all patent litigation, similar to its 5-year average. Unified is the only entity which deters invalid patent assertions and never pays NPEs.

Competitive Access Systems Linux cloud patent found invalid

On October 2, 2024, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 10,868,908, owned by Competitive Access Systems, an NPE. The ’908 patent relates to multilink communications between a client and server and was asserted against Oracle's Linux offering. Unified filed the initial reexamination proceeding on October 4, 2023, receiving the final rejection within one year after filing.

Blockchain Zone launches with support from COPA to deter Patent Trolls

We are pleased to announce that the Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a non-profit community of 20+ companies formed to help adoption of cryptocurrency through cross-licensing and encouraging, is now a member of Unified’s Transactions and Blockchain Zones.

With COPA’s support, Unified is launching the Blockchain Zone to target NPE/patent troll activity in related technologies. Several Unified members are also expanding membership to support the Blockchain Zone. Unified now will deter invalid NPE assertions in the Blockchain space through challenges, crowdsourcing (PATROLL) and publishing prior art, and obtaining no-money settlements from NPEs.

$2,000 awarded for Digimedia Tech TV programming patent prior art

Unified is pleased to announce PATROLL crowdsourcing contest winner, Nitish Jaswal, who was awarded $2,000 for his prior art submissions on U.S. Patent 7,065,778, owned and asserted by Digimedia Tech LLC, an NPE. The ‘778 patent relates to utilizing personalized video recorders and other similar types of devices to distribute television programming. It was asserted against WideOpenWest Finance and Midcontinent Communications.

We would also like to thank the dozens of other high-quality submissions that were made on this patent. The ongoing contests are open to anyone, and include tens of thousands of dollars in rewards available for helping the industry to challenge NPE patents of questionable validity by finding and submitting prior art in the contests.
